End of Year Sport Club Highlight: Rowan Equestrian
-->
Most people know about Rowan Campus Rec’s many traditional
sport clubs like basketball, baseball, and soccer, but we have always been open
to accepting new and unique clubs. One of our most popular unique clubs is Rowan University Equestrian!
Beginning in 2012, the Rowan University Equestrian Team
(RUET) offers a competitive and fun window into the world of horseback riding
and the entire Equestrian field. Although the team does participate in
competitions, they are also open to all “horse enthusiasts” and hope to introduce new
people to equestrian.
Competitive equestrian is a very broad sport with dozens of
different competitions under its umbrella. Competitions range from jumping
hurdles to judged trots based on the style and control of the horse's walk. Rowan
Equestrian has found a specific style and in a few short years since they’ve
started, they built a great program. Most Rowan riders compete in the Hunter Seat or
English style.
Competing in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zone
3 Region 2, Rowan has quickly taken to the competition, going up against teams
with much more experience and history than them. This season the team came in 4th
in their regions Hunter Seat competition just 9 points back of Rider University
in 3rd place.
RUET also had four riders qualify for regionals held in
March. Kate Grexa competed in the Walk-Trot competition coming in 3rd.
Kaelin Wiermer competed in the Novice Equitation on the Flat coming in 2nd
place and qualifying for the Zone wide competition where she came in 10th
place!
The team even had two riders finish in the top 10 of the
Hunter Seat Open Rider Standings with Kelly Suter coming in 5th and
Destiny Sheard coming in 9th in the region.
Thank you Rowan Equestrian for a great season! If you’re
interested in equestrian or joining this up and coming team, they practice and
compete at the Bon n’ Vin Stables in Newfield, NJ and you can contact the club
at RowanEquestrian@gmail.com.
