February Sport Club Highlight: Women's Ice Hockey

February Sport Club Highlight

The season is coming to a close for our winter sport clubs and a lot of them are seeing well-deserved playoff action as a result of their hard work.

Women’s Club Hockey has been one of our most successful competitive clubs, recently winning the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) D2 Championship in 2015 and the D3 DVCHC Championship in 2017. This season, they returned to Division 2 looking to bring their success back to a more competitive division.

After a hot 6-2 start to the season, Rowan faced some midseason struggles losing three straight games in December and January. The losing streak included two losses to their rivals, the University of Pennsylvania and a loss to a Villanova team that was 2-6 heading into the game.

Rowan overcame these struggles and closed out the regular season on an impressive three game win streak which included a 1-0 win over Montclair State, giving Montclair their only loss of the season.

Their success came from some great team play on offense and quality goaltending. Two players finished the regular season in the top 10 in goals scored Aubrie Weyhmiller (17) and Emily Render (11), Weyhmiller also finished in the top 10 in points with 25.

Both of Rowan’s goalies also had impressive seasons. Starting goalie Liz Ditzel finished the year first in the division in wins with 9 and fourth in save percentage (.870) and backup goalie Emily Render finished second in save percentage (.877) in her limited time in net.

The teams strong start and finish earned them a 9-5 record on the season and the #2 seed in the DVCHC playoff tournament. Unfortunately, UPenn had Rowans number this season and defeated the Profs for the fourth time in the DVCHC semi finals this past weekend.

Thank you Women’s Club Hockey for another great season! Please come out and support the rest of our winter and spring sport clubs as they make their playoffs runs.
