Tips for Eating Healthy in College

-->

Between exams, homework, and a maintaining a social life, many college students find that eating at the dining hall or opting for fast food is the most convenient choice.  However, eating healthy and maintaining balanced nutrition can just as easily be incorporated into someone’s daily routine!

Here are some tips for eating healthy in college:

1.     Pack meals ahead of time- Set aside a couple hours only one day a week where you can cook and prepare all of your food.  Throughout the week you won’t have to worry about what to eat next because your food will already be made.
2.     Drink water- Swap out all beverages for water!  I know it’s tempting to get Dunkin’ every morning, but save your time, money, and calories by opting for water.
3.     Eat breakfast- Having breakfast every morning will help control your hunger throughout the rest of the day.  Some foods you could try to incorporate for a balanced breakfast include fruit, oatmeal, whole wheat toast, and eggs.
4.     Keep healthy snacks handy- Bring fruit, protein bars, or nuts in your backpack so that if you get hungry while away from home you won’t have to buy whatever is around you.
5.     Shop Wisely- “Out of sight, out of mind!” If you aren’t buying chips, cookies, and ice cream then you won’t have to worry about temptation.  Experts recommend spending more time shopping in the outermost sections of your grocery store.  These sections contain fresh produce and meats while the inner aisles are home to more processed and packaged food.
6.     But also treat yourself- While you should focus on eating healthy for the most part, don’t deprive yourself of what you love!  Being on a strict diet can create temptations for binge eating.  It’s better to enjoy one small treat each day.
